The North American lumber industry is a world leader in sustainable forestry practices. Forest certification programs such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) involve independent third-party assessment that companies are operating in accordance with the principles of sustainable forest management that value the socio-economic and environmental contributions of forests.
The (FSC®) is an international certification and labelling system that enables businesses and consumers to make informed choices about the forest products they buy and create a positive change to keep our forests healthy for future generations. North American forestry management practices ensure that deforestation and other threats to biodiversity do not occur.
Today, wood’s responsibility in the supply chain is to serve as a fundamental and sustainable part of moving goods from one point to another safely, quickly, and efficiently. It does so every day, millions of times a day. Wood pallets and wood packaging truly do move the world, and it’s done sustainably.
Wood pallets and packaging are naturally almost completely made from wood. And wood’s strong environmental credentials have been captured in various Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). In fact, wooden pallets are the only packaging product to have gone through the EPD process, the results of which have shown that when considering their entire life cycle, wooden pallets can have a net carbon positive impact (carbon is captured in the wood, thereby removing it from the atmosphere).
The life cycle (LCA) and reverse logistics of the wooden pallet is truly an environmental success story. We take pride as an industry knowing that 95% of them are recovered, refurbished, and recycled. At the end of their service life they become landscape mulch, biofuel and animal bedding further extending their useful life span.
